A beta reader is someone who reads through a book manuscript in order to provide the author with feedback pertaining to the storyline, grammatical issues, etc. Beta readers are often the first people to read a completed manuscript and will often highlight issues the author and editor might have missed, such as:
• Plot holes or inconsistencies
• Issues with pacing
• Anachronisms
• Character issues
• Missing story elements
• Grammatical issues
• Structural issues
As well as pointing out potential problems, beta readers identify a manuscript’s strengths and selling points. You may have specific questions toanswer that an author has for their manuscript. BETA readers can also ARC the book once it is ready for publication.
ARC stands for Advanced Reader Copy. ARC readers are a group of people who will receive a completed manuscript from an author, for free, to read and review when the book publishes. Many authors will request that any issues in the book that are found, are communicated to them so they can correct before publication. The typical turn around for a ARC reader is 2-4 weeks before the book releases. Most authors require the reviews to be posted on the date of release on a variety of sites, including your personal socials if you are a book reviewer. You will receive a special ARC copy (typically ebook) via your email address that is yours to keep and does not expire, in exchange for your honest review. We do ask that any books with a 1-2 star review not be posted until 2 weeks after the release date and that you email us with the reason the book is lower in its rating.
An ALC stands for Advanced Listener Copy. Much like an ARC reader, an ALC will receive a copy of an AUDIOBOOK before release to listen to and review for the author on its release date.
